Prof Minoru Ono completed his Ph.D. at the School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, in 1998. After the completion of his Postdoctoral clinical fellowship at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Ohio State University, he took up a position as a Clinical Assistant at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo in 2001, Eventually rising to the position of Chairman of the department in 2009, and subsequently accepting the position as Chairman of the Department of Surgery in 2019. Prof Ono is also the Director of the Corporative Unit of Medicine and Engineering Research at the university.

A great believer in education, Prof Ono is a certified Proctor for the EVAHEART, HeartMate II, Jarvil 2000 and Berlin Heart EXCOR implants, and is heavily involved in multiple associations promoting surgical education and research, holding the position of Vice Chair of the Joint Committee of Heart Transplantation-related Medical Societies, and serving as an Advisor to the Japanese Association for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention. Prof Ono also sits on the Editorial Board for many Japanese as well as international journals.
