Koichi Toda, MD., PhD was born in Kobe, Japan in 1964 and graduated Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine (OUGM) in 1989. After he completed surgical residency in Osaka University (1989-1993), he joined in research program regarding artificial heart in National Cardiovascular Center (NCVC) and received Ph.D. Degree certified by OUGM (1993-1996). In 1996 he moved to Columbia University to work as post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery (1996-1998). After he completed post-doctoral fellowship and passed USMLE, he completed Thoracic Cardiovascular residency in Ochsner Clinic, New Orleans (1998-2000) and clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery in Brown University, Rhode Island (2000-2001). After returning to Japan, he worked as an attending cardiovascular surgeon in OUGM affiliated hospitals and NCVC (2001-2012) and promoted to Associate Professor and Clinical Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at OUGM (2012 - Present). His surgical specialty includes MCS, heart transplant, heart and lung transplant, minimally invasive surgery, and regenerative therapy using iPS. He also works as Board member of International Federation for Artificial Organs (IFAO) (2016-2021) and Japanese Society of Artificial Organs (JSAO) (2013 - Present), and will host The 57th Annual Meeting of the JSAO this year.
