Dr. Jim Long is the medical director for the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute. Dr. Long joined the staff of INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City in January, 2008, to work with the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute and the cardiovascular program as director of INTEGRIS Advanced Cardiac Care.


Prior to this, he founded and directed the Utah Artificial Heart Program at Intermountain HealthCare in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was Clinical Professor of Surgery and of Bioengineering at the University of Utah.

As a cardiothoracic surgeon his work with advanced heart failure has included high risk heart surgery, advanced Mechanical Circulatory Support and heart transplantation. His clinical experience with blood pumps began as an investigator with the first ever implantable heart pump approved by the FDA. His program went on to become the leading enrolling center for the landmark clinical trial that led to expanded use of heart pumps for long-term, permanent use. He has been a leader with initiatives to improve outcomes, quality of life and cost effectiveness.

His experience includes laboratory research with blood pumps. His innovation and leadership were instrumental in the development of a next-generation Left Ventricular Assist Device(LVAD) which is nearing clinical trials in the United States.
